6/29/2023 0 Comments Stalking the wild asparagus book![]() ![]() ![]() Nick’s journey occurs alongside the beginnings of a relationship with Wren, a wry, spirited oncologist at a nearby hospital, whose work and life becomes painfully tangled with Nick’s. ![]() But it isn’t until he learns to speak from the heart that he begins to find authentic human connections and is let in-to the worlds of the people he meets. He haunts lookalike fussy, silly, coffee shops, listens to old Joni Mitchell albums too loudly, and stares at his navel in the hope that he will find it in there. Nick, a young illustrator, can’t shake the feeling that there is some hidden realm of human interaction beyond his reach. A poignant and witty graphic novel by a leading New Yorker cartoonist, following a millennial's journey from performing his life to truly connecting with people ![]()

6/29/2023 0 Comments Alice by Christina Henry![]() Not to the extent that it’s difficult to read, but just enough to give the story character and convey the time period reflected in Alice’s fantasy world. It feels as if the writing intentionally matches the style and sound of Victorian England, in which period the original Alice books were written. It’s a different genre entirely Alice is categorized as horror or dark fantasy. It’s a grittier, harsher, and beautifully written. Why I kept reading: Wow! First off, Alice is not like the Black Wings books. I love the clever ways authors use details from the originals to make a new story. I have read some of the books in Christina Henry’s Black Wing series and enjoyed them. ![]() ![]() What drew me to this book: Reviews for this book are very good, and I like the vintage paper collage look of the cover. In this dark twist on a classic tale, Alice struggles to recover from the trauma of her past and her commitment to a mental institution, and to regain her power as an independent and whole person. ![]() 6/29/2023 0 Comments Twilight the graphic novel![]() ![]() Purists (AKA worshippers) will be bugged by minor differences, but those of you who appreciate Twilight in a less-avid way and who are fans of graphic novels will probably be happy with Young Kim's rendition of the bestselling book in the universe. If anything, this format allows for heightened drama. After all, Twilight is essentially dot-to-dot angst, and a graphic novel provides a snapshot of each of those dots. ![]() I think you'll find, as I did, that the graphic novel is a terrific format for this kind of storytelling. ![]() Of course, we should address more important matters. Do I sense a trend? Well, Alice looks exactly like movie Alice, and so do Mike and Jessica, Bella's new friends at school. And so does Bella's dad, who is blond here. Edward looks a little younger and sweeter, too, for that matter. ![]() Forty-one customer reviews have already been posted, with an average rating of 4-1/2 stars.Īs for me, I found myself looking to see how Kim's artwork compared to the movie cast, because hey, isn't that the first thing you would do? For the record, this Bella is much sweeter looking than Kirsten Stewart, who has a kind of world-weary edge to her. A few statistics: The book has been out four days and is #24 in 's sales ranking. On a darker note, I picked up the first Twilight graphic novel this week. ![]() 6/29/2023 0 Comments Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen![]() ![]() I appreciate Dessen’s attempt at a semi-feminist main character. What the heck happened with that? Someone please explain. I thought she did, but then she dropped it in the pond. Also, I was really confused about whether or not Ruby gave Nate the key to the yellow house. There was a weird section near the beginning where some of the story is told out of order that I thought could have been avoided, but it was a small bump in the road. ![]() I found a few technical errors, as I often do, but Dessen’s voice is strong. Lock and Key is like most Sarah Dessen books: good. This book wasn’t calling to me or anything, but their YA section is limited, so this is what I ended up with. This is the second book I’ve checked out from the Free Library of Philadelphia since I moved to Philly in July. So why is Ruby such a reluctant Cinderella, wary and defensive? And why is Nate, the genial boy next door with some secrets of his own, unable to accept the help that Ruby is just learning to give? A luxurious house, fancy private school, a new wardrobe, the promise of college and a future it’s a dream come true. For the past few months, she’s been on her own in the yellow house, managing somehow, knowing that her mother will probably never return. That’s how she comes to live with Cora, the sister she hasn’t seen in ten years, and Cora’s husband Jamie, whose down-to-earth demeanor makes it hard for Ruby to believe he founded the most popular networking Web site around. Goodreads synopsis: Ruby knows that the game is up. ![]() ![]() ![]() Gods of Mars also examines how religion is used to justify the demeaning and degradation of others. Gods of Mars examines how so many different cultures believe their religion or faith is the "right" faith without deeply exploring and examining it or what else exists in the world. This is science fiction at its best, an out of this world story to examine very real world issues. It's so improbable and ridiculous, but you end up loving it because the boys are back in town and they're about to kick some ass.Īs fun as this novel is it also does a great examination of religion. Every few chapters or so John Carter finds himself in a dangerous situation, turns around and is surprised to find one of his old friends from the last novel there just in time to help him save the day. This book feels like the song The Boys Are Back in Town by Thin Lizzy. ![]() The entire book is basically John Carter's journey to reunite with his Princess / Wife / Baby Mama Deja and it is so glorious. He's landed in what many Barsoomians imagine to be heaven, but it's more like a hell on Mars. John Carter finds himself returned to Barsoom (Mars) at the beginning of this novel. However, a couple of chapters in I knew I would love this book. ![]() While I enjoyed the first novel in this series, Princess of Mars, it didn't blow me away and I expected more of the same from The Gods of Mars. ![]() ![]() ![]() Delivery with Standard Australia Post usually happens within 2-10 business days from time of dispatch. You can track your delivery by going to AusPost tracking and entering your tracking number - your Order Shipped email will contain this information for each parcel. On September 23, 2016, I will embark on a 5 day Chiropractic service trip to Haiti. I spring out of bed at 4:30-5:00am every day to meditate, exercise, and practice chiropractic skills while still managing to enjoy the ski, surf, and sun-filled adventures the West Coast has to offer! I spend about 40 hours a week in the classroom, work 2 part time jobs (Student Life Activities Coordinator, and School Bookstore/ Mailroom Cashier), am Vice President of the school’s public speaking club, and work as a Student Ambassador for the enrollment department– I’m “better when I’m busy” (and I don’t think these Cali folk realize how “turbo” an East Coaster can be!) Aside from this, I still manage to set aside for personal growth: mind, body, and spirit. I had plenty alone time on the long, cross-country drive to try and imagine what to expect, but can honestly say that my mind (and heart) are continually blown open while embarking on this chiropractic experience! Thank you for taking the time to check out my page! 10 months ago, I began the exciting and fulfilling journey of chiropractic school at Life Chiropractic College West in the San Francisco Bay area. ![]() 6/29/2023 0 Comments Nora krug books![]() When this book originally emerged in 2017, many worried that authoritarianism was at our doorstep, despite recent and terrible lessons from the 20th century. ![]() On Tyranny has been cited–and cherished–by countless journalists and thought leaders as diverse as Hillary Clinton, Rachel Maddow, and Ken Burns. On Tyranny’s slight size is deceptive in its power: Snyder’s handbook offers us 20 powerful steps to preserve our freedom, to activate for change, and to look menacing threats to our democracy squarely in the eye as individuals with agency, and power to participate in social resistance. Snyder and artist Nora Krug have made a graphic illustrated edition, to amplify the urgent message from the earlier edition. Of the countless books that emerged from the Trump years, one of the great standouts is Timothy Snyder’s slim pocketbook, On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century. ![]() Support authors and local bookstores by purchasing a copy of On Tyranny Graphic Edition: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century from Skylight Books here. ![]() 6/28/2023 0 Comments Indiana by George Sand![]() Yet even as the poem seems to reach in those lines towards an idealized androgyny, it also insists that her attempts to deny her “woman’s nature” are vain:įloats back dishevelled strength in agony, Till God unsex thee on the heavenly shore ![]() “To George Sand: A Recognition” ends with a vision of her spirit finally set free of such limits: The sonnets celebrate the power of Sand’s voice and her defiance of convention, particularly her attempt to transcend the limits of her sex. Self-called George Sand! whose soul, amid the lionsĪnd answers roar for roar, as spirits can… And George Sand is … something else.īefore reading Indiana I knew George Sand mostly from Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s sonnets about her, which I routinely assign in my seminar on the Victorian ‘woman question.’ “Thou large-brained woman and large-hearted man,” begins “To George Sand: A Desire”: His name is a byword for literary seriousness: he is the Father of the Modern Novel. ![]() ![]() We thought this would be an interesting choice because Sand is more or less the anti-Flaubert: sentimental where he is relentlessly not, idealist where he is realist, not much esteemed (or at least read) today–note, again, the date of that “new” translation. We settled on Indiana because it was the most readily available (there’s a nice Oxford World’s Classics edition, with a “new” translation and an introduction by eminent literary scholar Naomi Schor). My intrepid book club, which followed up Madame Bovary with Julian Barnes’s Flaubert’s Parrot, decided that our next step would be something by George Sand. ![]() ![]() ![]() Grow skin on level with your average Nile crocodile.
